First of all... Functional foremenship is a technique and yes both r
contradictory.
Unity of command means there should b only one boss to whom a subordinate have to give report and receive orders but
In functional frmnship.. There are 8 to supervise a single worker. Mean to say.. here a prsn have to report to 8 superiors.

Dear Student,
According to the principle of Unity of Command, any person should be answerable to just one boss. If an individual receives command from two or more people then, this principle is violated. However, under functional foremanship, the workers at the lower level management are assigned to take orders from eight foremen. That is, each worker has to follow the commands given by any of the eight foremen (which is in violation to the principle of unity of command).

The principle of unity of command states that an employee should receive orders from and be answerable only to one superior. On the other hand, under functional foremanship an employee receives order from many superiors at a time and he/she is answerable to all of them. Hence, we find that there is a contradiction between the two. This contradiction is because of the difference in their respective objective.
The objective of the principle of unity of command is to avoid confusion regarding the work to be done and that of functional foremanship is to make possible the full utilisation of expertise of various experts.
