Similarly, liquids can seep into the internals of the controller and damage the board inside, rendering the controller inoperable.

When you are finished using the controller, make sure to set it down in a safe location where it will not be knocked over or fall from a large height, and be sure to place the controller so that the grips and bottoms of the triggers are against the surface, and the buttons and sticks are facing up.

Leaving the controller with the sticks facing down can cause damage to the sticks over time, which may cause loosening of the control sticks and prevent them from accurately reading inputs.

Do not rest anything heavy on top of the controller, as this can cause strain on the buttons and internal mechanisms of the device. Occasionally, when placed down on a surface, the triggers may be pressed in as they are on the bottom of the device. Try to set the controller down gently on a flat surface to prevent unwanted trigger inputs.

This pad reads touch inputs much like a smartphone (direction swipes, taps, pinching in and out) as well as serving as a very large button that you can press.

Functionality in games varies, with many using the touchpad simply as an additional large button. This is by far the most common functionality of the touchpad.

Some games make use of the touch features of the pad as well, for menu or map navigation, or to issue commands. However, since the Microsoft Xbox controller does not have a touchpad, most multiplatform games stuck to using it solely as a button.

Some notable games that make extensive use of the touchpad are Until Dawn, Gravity Rush 2, Killzone: Shadow Fall, and Tearaway Unfolded.

Why is there a light on the front of my controller?

One unique feature of the DualShock 4 controller is the light at the front of the controller, which is called the light bar. Normally this light is blue when the controller is turned on, but you may see the light change colors based on what’s happening with your controller.

The light bar will turn yellow when the controller is plugged in and charging while the PlayStation console is on standby mode.

Some games may also change the color of the light bar. Some games assign different colors to different players during local multiplayer so that you can tell each player’s controller apart.
