Most people know the main buttons on a PlayStation 4 controller just by looking at it: Triangle, Square, Cross, and Circle.

Did you know that the left and right control sticks also double as button inputs?

Today, we will show you how to find L3 and R3 on your DualShock 4 controller, tell you how these buttons are commonly used in games, and provide you with some other tips for using your DualShock 4.

To use R3 on a PlayStation 4 controller, you have to “click” the right analog thumbstick on the controller. You can do this by pushing the thumbstick in. If you succeed, you should hear a clicking noise (and an accompanying in-game action if applicable). The same applies to the L3 function, which can be done the same way with the left thumbstick.

Read on further for more information about other input methods and tips on using your PlayStation 4 controller.

Both L3 and R3 can be found on the PlayStation 4 controller as part of the two analog sticks found below the touchpad. These sticks are used for navigating menus, controlling characters, and moving the camera.

By pushing the left or right stick in gently, the stick will click. These are the L3/R3 inputs, respectively. You can both press and hold down either of these inputs.

L3 and R3 are mainstays of the DualShock controller – the official controller type for PlayStation – having been around for multiple generations.

Why are these inputs called “L3 and R3?”

The L3 and R3 inputs are labeled that way as they are the third left and right inputs added to the DualShock line of PlayStation controllers.

L1 and R1 are the left and right top buttons on the front of the controller (commonly referred to as shoulder buttons), and L2 and R2 are the left and right bottom buttons on the front of the controller (commonly referred to as triggers). The L1/R1 and L2/R2 have been present on all PlayStation controller iterations, though the design has changed over time.

The analog sticks were added first with the Analog Controller for the PlayStation, and then carried over to the original DualShock controller design (the DualShock name comes from the added vibration, or rumble, feature).

Not only did the analog sticks allow for true analog movement in some PlayStation games, but they also included two new button inputs on the controller by pressing in either stick.

How do I prevent damage to the PlayStation 4 controller?

Make sure you maintain a tight grip on the controller while using it, as dropping the controller can cause damage and impact its ability to function.

Furthermore, ensure that your hands are dry and clean before handling the controller. Small particles can get into the gaps between the buttons or the wells of the control sticks and impede the functionality of the device.

Similarly, liquids can seep into the internals of the controller and damage the board inside, rendering the controller inoperable.

When you are finished using the controller, make sure to set it down in a safe location where it will not be knocked over or fall from a large height, and be sure to place the controller so that the grips and bottoms of the triggers are against the surface, and the buttons and sticks are facing up.

Leaving the controller with the sticks facing down can cause damage to the sticks over time, which may cause loosening of the control sticks and prevent them from accurately reading inputs.

Do not rest anything heavy on top of the controller, as this can cause strain on the buttons and internal mechanisms of the device. Occasionally, when placed down on a surface, the triggers may be pressed in as they are on the bottom of the device. Try to set the controller down gently on a flat surface to prevent unwanted trigger inputs.

How do I use the touchpad on a DualShock 4?

If you’re curious about what the big, rectangular pad in the center of your PlayStation 4 controller is all about, that’s the touchpad.

This pad reads touch inputs much like a smartphone (direction swipes, taps, pinching in and out) as well as serving as a very large button that you can press.

Functionality in games varies, with many using the touchpad simply as an additional large button. This is by far the most common functionality of the touchpad.

Some games make use of the touch features of the pad as well, for menu or map navigation, or to issue commands. However, since the Microsoft Xbox controller does not have a touchpad, most multiplatform games stuck to using it solely as a button.

Some notable games that make extensive use of the touchpad are Until Dawn, Gravity Rush 2, Killzone: Shadow Fall, and Tearaway Unfolded.

Why is there a light on the front of my controller?

One unique feature of the DualShock 4 controller is the light at the front of the controller, which is called the light bar. Normally this light is blue when the controller is turned on, but you may see the light change colors based on what’s happening with your controller.

The light bar will turn yellow when the controller is plugged in and charging while the PlayStation console is on standby mode.

Some games may also change the color of the light bar. Some games assign different colors to different players during local multiplayer so that you can tell each player’s controller apart.

Other games may change the color of the light to reflect status in-game (for example, turning the light from blue to red when the player has low health).

The controllers of competing consoles did not include this feature, so many multiplatform games do not change the color of the light. Some games that utilize the lightbar include Metro 2033 Redux, Transistor, Grand Theft Auto V, and Infamous: Second Son.
