What filenames can I use ?

PowerPoint file names can be as long as 218 characters although it is not recommended to have file names longer than about 40 characters.
They can include any combination of alphanumeric characters, spaces and special characters, with the exception of a few: < > ? [ ] : * \ / | ; ] "
You can also use a combination of upper and lowercase letters.
You should try and make your filename descriptive so you and others can easily identify them.

Saving your Presentations

There may be times when you want to save different versions of the same presentation.
You can save a presentation with a different name using the (File > Save As) dialog box
Select the folder you want to store the presentation in using the Save in drop-down list.
Enter the new filename in the File name text box at the bottom. You do not need to include the ".ppt" file extension in this dialog box.

A copy of your presentation will now be saved and this copy is displayed. Your original presentation is no longer displayed.
You can share files with users of older versions of Microsoft PowerPoint by using the Save As command on the File menu to save the file as the correct file type.
The first time you save a presentation you will be prompted to provide a filename.
You can save duplicate copies of your presentations in the same directory as your originals (File > Save As)(Tools, Save Options)
A PowerPoint presentation file is specific to the version of PowerPoint that is was created in. PowerPoint can read presentations that were created in an earlier version but cannot open Presentation files that were created in a later version.

Saving in a different Format

It is possible to save a PowerPoint presentation in a variety of different formats.
To save a presentation in a different file format you can change the save as drop-down box.

When you save a presentation for the first time, the Save As dialog box appears

Choosing to save the presentation as a web page will allow it to be viewed through a browser.
In most cases you will want to save your presentations in the default format "Presentation (.ppt)"
Presentation - This is compatible with all version of PowerPoint 97, 2000, 2002 and 2003 and it preserves all features.
PowerPoint 97-2003 and 95 format - This adds compatibility for PowerPoint 95. This will increase the file size quite significantly since graphics are not compressed in PowerPoint 95. Presentations saved in this format support both compressed and uncompressed graphics. All features are preserved although any new features will obviously not be visible in the earlier versions.
Presentation for Review - This is no an option when you first save a file, but selecting (File > Save As) a second time will display this option. This format is almost identical to the "Presentation" format but it also keeps track of any changes made to any e-mailed copies of the presentation. This allows you to merge the changes made at a later date. This format should not be used unnecessarily because the file size will increase significantly every time changes are merged together.

Saving Template Default Location

Whenever a template (.pot, ) is selected in the "Save as type" drop-down the "Save in" automatically changes to the following folder path:
Word 2016 - C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\
Word 2013 - C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\
Word 2010 - C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\
Word 2007 - C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\
This folder location can be changed in the registry but this is not advisable as it will change the setting in Word as well.

Important

If you use (File > Save As) to make a backup copy of a workbook any formulas that referred to the original workbook will be changed to refer to the new workbook.
The AutoRecover feature can be very useful as well as very annoying. Make sure the "Save AutoRecover info every "x" minutes is not too frequent.
You can add a password to your presentations to prevent other people from accessing them. Select the Tools drop-down list from the Save As dialog box and choose Security Options.
