Creating and finding your bookmarks

Instead of memorising long web addresses, use browser bookmarks to easily save the webpages you’d like to revisit. To create a bookmark for the page you’re on, click the

Adding bookmarks

  • Use keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+D (Mac: ⌘-D)
  • Import bookmarks from other browsers via the Chrome menu
  • Manually add a bookmark. Right-click the bookmarks bar and select Add page.
  • Drag a link from the page that you're viewing to the Bookmarks bar or a bookmark folder to create a bookmark for the link. Similarly, you can also drag the globe or lock icon in the address bar to create a bookmark for your current page.

Finding bookmarks

If you can’t remember where you filed that one bookmark, search for it directly from the address bar. Type the name of the bookmark and look for the

 icon next to the results that appear, which indicates matches from your bookmarks.

You can also see all your bookmarks in 3 places:

  • Bookmarks bar: The bar is docked under your address bar by default for easy access. If you don’t see it, you can find it by opening a new tab. To toggle the display of the bar, just press Ctrl+Shift+B (Mac: ⌘-Shift-B).
  • Bookmarks menu: Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar and select Bookmarks.
  • Bookmark manager: The bookmark manager makes it easy for you to organise bookmarks. Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar and go to Bookmarks > Bookmark manager.

Use bookmark folders to keep your bookmarks organised. To create a folder, right-click the bookmarks bar and select Add folder.



Showing / Hiding the Bookmarks bar

The bookmarks bar contains all your bookmarks and bookmark folders created in Google Chrome. You can dock the bar directly underneath the address bar at the top of the browser window for easy access to your favourite sites.

  1. Click the Chrome menu  on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Bookmarks.
  3. Select Always show bookmarks bar.

You can also use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Shift+B (Windows and Chrome OS) and ⌘-Shift-B (Mac) to toggle the bar on and off.

Hiding the bookmarks bar

Right-click (or control-click on a Mac) the bookmarks bar and deselect Always show bookmarks bar. When the bookmarks bar is undocked, you can always find it at the top of the New Tab page.

Managing items on the bookmarks bar

  • Move bookmarks or folders around - Simply click the item that you want to move and drag it to its new destination on the bar.
  • Add a new bookmark or bookmark folderRight-click anywhere on bar and select either Add page or Add folder.
  • Edit a bookmark or folderRight-click (or control-click on a Mac) the item you'd like edit and select either Rename (if it's a folder) or Edit (if it's a bookmark).
  • Delete a bookmark or folderRight-click the item and select Delete.


Importing your bookmarks

  If you've got bookmarks or favourites stored in another browser, you can easily import them into Google Chrome.

There are two ways you can import your bookmarks; either by using Google Chromes import from another browser option or by exporting you bookmarks to a HTML file, then importing them back into Chrome.

Import your bookmarks from another browser

  1. Click the Chrome menu  on the browser toolbar in Google Chrome.
  2. Select Bookmarks.
  3. Select Import bookmarks and settings.
  4. Select the browser from the list that contains the bookmarks you'd like to import.
  5. Click Import.

Note: This option is not available if using a Chrome device. Instead, export your bookmarks as a HTML file and import them via the bookmark manager.

Import your bookmarks from a HTML file

  1. Export bookmarks from the browser as a HTML file.
  2. Click the Chrome menu  on the browser toolbar in Google Chrome. 
  3. Select Bookmarks. 
  4. Select Bookmark manager. 
  5. Click the Organise menu in the manager. 
  6. Select Import bookmarks from HTML file. 
  7. Open your saved HTML file.

If you haven't yet created any bookmarks in Chrome, the bookmarks you import will show up directly on the bookmarks bar. If you already have bookmarks within Chrome, the bookmarks that you import will appear in a new folder located at the end of the bar.



Using the Bookmark Manager

You can use the bookmark manager to organise your bookmarks and folders. To open the manager, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Chrome menu  on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Bookmarks
  3. Select Bookmark manager.

Here are a few tips for using the manager:

  • Move bookmarks or folders around - Simply click the item you want to move and drag it to its new destination within the folder list on the left.
  • Edit the name or web address of a bookmark, or a folder name - Select the item you'd like to edit, click the Organise menu, then select Edit. You can also easily edit bookmarks and folders from the bookmarks bar by right-clicking the item in question and selecting Rename.
  • Search bookmarks - Use the search box at the top to quickly find a bookmark within the manager.
  • Add a new bookmark folder - In the folder list on the left, right-click the location where you want the new folder to reside and select Add folder
  • Delete a bookmark or folder - Right-click the item and select Delete.

Where is the Chrome Bookmark Manager?

To open the Bookmark Manager: Click the Chrome menu in the top-right corner of the browser, hover the mouse over Bookmarks, then select Bookmark manager from the drop-down menu. The Bookmark Manager will appear.

What are managed Bookmarks in Chrome?

For administrators who manage Chrome browser or ChromeOS devices for a business or school. As an admin, you can create and organize managed bookmarks to give users quick access to web resources when they're signed in to Chrome. The webpages that you add appear in a folder on their bookmarks bar.
